In light of the Autism Act 2009 and subsequent national autism strategy, it has become essential for NHS staff to have a good understanding of autism. This is particularly the case for section 12 approved clinicians as autism is considered a mental disorder under the Mental Health Act. This masterclass will provide an overview of the essential clinical presentations of autism as well as covering comorbid mental health issues. It will also include a service user perspective and tips on management of autistic patients and making appropriate reasonable adjustments to your practice.

Led by Dr Alison Stansfield, Dr Conor Davidson and Dr James McGrath the session will cover what autism is, relevant legislation, the epidemiology and aetiology of autism, the essential features of autism and how it presents, and the mental and physical health comorbidities commonly seen in autism. Subtler presentations, overlap with gender identity and female presentations will be included. Tips and tricks for better understanding and managing this patient group will also be covered.
