The language deprivation pandemic is a hidden one that effects approximately 70% of deaf children in the UK, and been around in the early 19th Century, yet we are still learning about the lasting effects. It is considered a safeguarding concern, and everyone has responsibility to abolish this practice. The purpose of this talk is to raise awareness of this matter, within the field of mental health. Dr Rachael Hayes, Deaf Service Consultant, will be talking about the principles of language deprivation, signs and symptoms of language deprivation and sharing some strategies of how to work with these children. Dr Hayes will also be sharing the effects of not being given a complete language on the child’s brain and development, including their mental wellbeing.
