Addiction is common and often leads to harmful consequences, with profound effects on the person, their family, community and society. It is important to assess for addiction and substance use disorders, as there are evidenced based biopsychosocial treatments available that improve outcomes as advocated by Department of Health and NICE guidelines.

The purpose of the talk is to update the attendees on addictions assessment and management. The session is led by Dr Soraya Mayet, Consultant Psychiatrist Addictions Specialist, will mainly cover drug (including novel psychoactive substances and club drugs) and alcohol use disorders, harms of addiction, causes of addiction, screening and specialist assessment for addictions and biopsychosocial interventions for addictions.
After attending this course delegates will be able to:

1. Prevalence of substance use, harms associated and causes of addiction

2. Assess patients with drug or alcohol use disorders and other addictions

3. Learn the biopsychosocial interventions for addictions
