The liberalisation of our gambling laws in 2005 has changed the landscape. Modern commercial gambling is supported by a £15bn industry that uses £1.5bn advertising and marketing budget. Once behind frosted glass, we now have a super casino in our pockets and in our homes with access 24/7. This new public health crisis remains largely hidden from view. It is important that health services can identify and respond to gambling problems, which are commonly co-morbid with other mental health and impulse control problems

Led by Dr Matthew Gaskell, this introduction to gambling addiction will provide healthcare professionals with greater understanding of gambling addiction, the determinants of harm, the consequences of harm, co-morbidity, and treatment. It will also provide non-specialists with ways to identify gambling problems and intervene if specialists treatment is not required. A case example of gambling addiction will be provided. It will include an outline of the new NHS Northern Gambling Clinics.

After attending this course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand gambling addiction, its determinants and consequences
  • Use the pathways model of gambling addiction to understand subtypes and co-morbidity
  • Make use of non-specialist interventions and refer for specialist treatment
