9.00am Registration, 9.30am Welcome and 4.30pm Close
Life expectancy for people with Down's Syndrome (DS) is not 65/70 years of age, yet in 1983 it was just 25 years. It has been suggested that it will be the first generation of people with DS to outlive their parents. Society needs to embrace this and strive to ensure expectations of development and inclusion improve.
Led by Dr Wendy Uttley, Coordinator & Trainer, Down Syndrome Training & Support Service Ltd, we will look at what Down's Syndrome is, possible health implications, the learning profile – strengths and weaknesses, how to help development, manage unwanted behaviours and the importance of good sexuality relationships education.
After attending this course delegates will be able to:
- Understand what DS is and how people with DS learn
- Understand the health implications of DS
- Understand the importance of SRE for young people with DS and how to tackle issues like public v private and appropriate social behaviours
