The provision of treatment, care and support for Military Veterans with mental health and related problems has been varied across the UK and the regions; it is provided by numerous statutory and third sector organisations. Navigating healthcare and support systems is complicated enough for professionals and represents a significant challenge for Veterans in terms of identifying and accessing appropriate services. Over the last few years, NHS England has invested in dedicated mental health services for Veterans which align with NICE guidelines for the treatment of military related trauma (PTSD) and The Armed Forces Covenant.
Dr. Lawrence Atkins, Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry and Clinical Lead for Veterans Mental Health Services provided by Leeds & York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, will cover the following:
- The current provision of statutory and non-statutory services for Military Veterans in England.
- Common mental health and related problems experienced by Military Veterans with a focus on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
- NICE guidelines and treatment pathways for service related PTSD.
- Examples of the lived experience of Military Veterans with mental health problems.
