Assessment and Formulation in Medical Psychotherapy
Tuesday 24th January 2023Leeds (Venue TBC)
9.00am Registration, 9.30am Start and 12.30pm Close
Assessment and formulation are the foundations of the core business for both psychiatry and psychotherapy, informing and directing the management plan for patients. However, both processes can be difficult to complete; often knowing what to include or not can be complicated . Within medical psychotherapy, assessment and formulation can vary considerably depending on the therapeutic model undertaken. Within LYPFT Medical Psychotherapy Service, three different models of psychotherapy are offered: Cognitive Behavioural, Cognitive Analytic and Psychoanalytic. Having an understanding of how problems are formulated in these different models can often help to support a clinician’s thinking and facilitate referral decisions for patients.
The purpose of this masterclass module will be to help clinicians broaden their thinking about assessment and formulation focussing on the three models offered by the LYPFT Medical Psychotherapy Service; CBT, CAT and Psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
After attending this course delegates will be able to:
- Have a basic theoretical and clinical understanding of three different models of psychotherapy; CBT, CAT and Psychoanalytic
- Have an understanding of the assessment process within the three models of psychotherapy
- Be able to begin to formulate in each of the three models of psychotherapy.
- Inform their decision making regarding making appropriate referrals for the three models of psychotherapy.
